What is expected value (EV) in sports betting?
Expected value (EV) is a key concept in smart sports betting. It helps you measure how profitable a bet is in the long run by comparing the odds with the actual probability of winning. In short: EV tells you whether a bet has a positive or a negative edge.
If a bet has positive expected value (+EV), you’re getting good odds compared to the true chance of winning — a bet worth making. If it’s negative (−EV), the odds are stacked against you, and the bet will likely lose money over time.
Professional and sharp bettors rely on EV calculations to make mathematically sound decisions instead of betting on gut feeling or hype.
How to use the EV calculator
- Enter the odds your sportsbook offers — American (+150), decimal (2.50) or fractional (3/2). The format is detected automatically.
- Add your estimated win probability, or switch to Sharp line (no-vig) and enter both sides of a sharp sportsbook’s market to get the fair probability.
- Enter your stake to see the expected value in dollars.
- Read the verdict: +EV means the odds pay more than the true chance of winning deserves.
The EV formula
EV % = win probability × decimal odds − 1
Break-even probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds
Example: a $100.00 bet at +150 (decimal 2.50) that you think wins 45% of the time.
EV = 0.45 × $150.00 − 0.55 × $100.00 = +$12.50, or +12.5% per bet. The odds imply a break-even probability of 40.0%, so your edge is +5.0 percentage points.
Where does the win probability come from?
- Your own model or research — the more accurate it is, the more reliable your EV.
- A sharp sportsbook’s line. Sharp books have low margins and efficient prices. Remove the vig and you get a solid estimate of the true probability — that’s exactly what the “Sharp line (no-vig)” mode does.
- SafeBet’s AI calculates its own odds for every game it analyzes and sends EV plays when the edge is 3–10%.
